The Feline Herpes Virus (FHV-1)
|
"My eyes were red and swollen. I had flu-like
symptoms: lethargy, runny nose, sneezing, digestive upset, etc. Meowmy
took me to the vet and gave me a nasty tasting antibiotic called Clavamox.
It appeared that the infection cleared but a few days
after Meowmy stopped the Clavamox the symptoms reappeared. Then
the vet said that a herpes virus is probably what is causing my
symptoms. Meowmy did some research and started giving me 500 mg of
l-lysine per day. I've been healthy ever
since."

It is estimated that
85% of all cats have the feline herpes virus, though many never show any
symptoms. Those that do show symptoms have redness and swelling around one or both
eyes. They also experience flu symptoms.
There is no cure for the
herpes virus but the symptoms can be controlled. L-lysine, an amino acid,
interferes with the replication of viruses thus reducing their numbers. The
result is healthy looking eyes and a kitty that feels a whole lot better
overall. L-lysine can be purchased at health food stores and does not require a
prescription. It is a lot less expensive than antiviral
medications.
The dosage recommended most is 500 mg per day
until the symptoms disappear. That seems like a lot for a cat! But that's
how much it takes to work. After the symptoms are under control, the dosage can
be decreased to 250 mg per day.
I asked my vet about l-lysine and she said
"I'm glad you brought that up!! Yes, you should try it!". I buy l-lysine in capsule form and mix the powder in the juice
from a can of chicken. Angel drinks it all up, which surprises me because
he is extremely finicky.
Stress can precipitate an outbreak of
symptoms, so it is best to provide a home for your cat that causes as little
stress as possible.
